由彼得．威爾（Peter Weir）導演執導、羅賓．威廉斯（Robin Williams）主演的校園勵志電影《暴雨驕陽》（Dead Poet Society, 1989），最為人津津樂道的，就要數學生齊齊站在書桌上朗誦《喔！船長！我的船長！》（O Captain! My Captain!）那結尾一幕:在基廷老師即將離開學校之際，學生們為了表達對他的敬意和支持，紛紛站在桌上，齊聲朗誦美國十九世紀著名詩人華特．惠特曼（Walt Whitman）所寫的輓歌:
O Captain! my Captain! our fearful trip is done, 喔！船長！我的船長！我們驚險的航程已經完成，
The ship has weather’d every rack, the prize we sought is won, 這艘船已渡過所有的危險，我們贏得了勝利的果實，
The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting, 港口就在眼前，我聽見鐘聲在響，人們在歡呼，
While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring; 當我舉目凝望，萬眾都在翹首以待；
But O heart! heart! heart! 但，心啊！心啊！心啊！
O the bleeding drops of red, 喔！滴血的紅點，
Where on the deck my Captain lies, 在那裏，我的船長倒臥着，
Fallen cold and dead. 已倒臥、冰冷、而且死去。
O Captain! my Captain! rise up and hear the bells; 喔！船長！我的船長！站起來，聽聽這鐘聲；
Rise up- for you the flag is flung- for you the bugle trills, 站起來，——為你而升起的旗幟——為你而響的號角；
For you bouquets and ribbon’d wreaths- for you the shores a-crowding, 為你而來的鮮花與彩帶——為你而擁擠的人群；
For you they call, the swaying mass, their eager faces turning; 人們都在呼喚你，搖擺不定地渴望着你的身影；
Here Captain! dear father! 這裏，船長！親愛的父親！
This arm beneath your head! 將你的頭放在我的臂膀下！
It is some dream that on the deck, 這只是一個夢嗎？你在甲板上
You’ve fallen cold and dead. 已倒臥、冰冷、而且死去。
My Captain does not answer, his lips are pale and still, 我們的船長沒有回答，他的嘴唇蒼白而寂靜，
My father does not feel my arm, he has no pulse nor will, 我的父親沒有感覺到我的手臂，他沒有脈搏、也沒有意志；
The ship is anchor’d safe and sound, its voyage closed and done, 這艘船已安全地停泊，它已完成了航程，
From fearful trip the victor ship comes in with object won; 這艘勝利的船從驚險的航程歸來，帶來了勝利的果實；
Exult O shores, and ring O bells! 歡呼吧，喔！海岸，敲響吧，喔！鐘聲！
But I with mournful tread, 然而我卻要用悲傷的腳步，
Walk the deck my Captain lies, 走過我的船長倒臥的地方，
Fallen cold and dead. 已倒臥、冰冷、而且死去。
這首詩原本是惠特曼為了悼念美國總統林肯而作，詩中的「船長」象徵林肯，而「船」則代表美國。詩歌的第一節，描寫了船隻歷經艱險，終於抵達港口的景象，表達了勝利的喜悅。然而，詩人突然筆鋒一轉，描寫了船長倒臥在甲板上，冰冷死去的悲慘畫面。這強烈的對比，暗示了理想的實現往往伴隨着犧牲和痛苦。
在電影中，學生們把「船長」轉喻為基廷老師，把他視為引領他們走出迷茫，找到人生方向的精神領袖。電影中的「喔！船長！我的船長！」提醒我們，追尋理想的道路往往充滿艱辛，但我們不能因此放棄。正如基廷老師所教導的，我們要勇敢地活出真實的自我，並為實現自己的夢想而努力奮鬥。這首詩也呼籲我們，要珍惜那些啟發我們心智，引領我們前進的「船長」，並把他們的精神傳承下去。
